Adolf Wölfli (1864–1930) was born in Switzerland. He often changed jobs, mostly performing unskilled manual labor. In 1890, he was committed to the Waldau psychiatric institution, where, in 1899, he started drawing. He also wrote, filling thousands of pages with lavishly illustrated text. His psychiatrist Walter Morgenthaler dedicated a monograph to him; titled Ein Geisteskranker als Künstler (1921), it was the first book to present a psychiatric patient as an artist. Wölfli’s works have been shown at documenta, Kassel, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
