Alfred Wallis (1855–1942) was a British artist. He started working as a shipboy when he was nine, sailing the North Atlantic on merchant and deep-sea fishing vessels. After marrying, he moved his family to St. Ives, Cornwall, where he ran a small shop and, in the 1920s, started painting. It was in St. Ives that he was introduced to Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Tate Modern, London, and other museums.
