Aloys Sauter (1875–1952) was born in the Belgian village of Stabroek and worked as a car body maker before running a thrift store with his brother, repairing furniture, and restoring paintings. He was also an inventor; among his designs was a flying machine he called the “Sauteral.” His wife was a poet. He lived a reclusive life in Montreuil, France, and painted only a few pictures.
