John Kane (1860–1934), a native of Scotland, emigrated to the U.S. in 1879. Having worked as a miner, carpenter, steelworker, housepainter, and boxer, he started painting in 1900 and won the Carnegie Prize in 1927. His pictures were exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
